I am even more of a latecomer (I have no sound). Nicely penned.

You put forth your ideas about Susan Boyle so astutely. How wonderful it would be if she did not become tainted by the media and its expectations and remained the beautiful woman she is. These "cookie cutter" images are a dangerous precedent for our daughters to follow---and they do. To aspire to good character and tenacity would be so much better.

I try to be somewhat restrained in what I say in my pieces, so I avoid phrases like "bird cage liner", "Volkischer Beobachter" and, as you rightly point out, "emergency toilet paper" in describing the Daily Mail. Oops.

I digress. I am concerned that people are talking Ms. Boyle the wrong way: rather than find her a surprise, they should find their own assumptions to be the surprise and surprisingly incorrect. And yes, a lot of people simply aren't clever enough to pick up on this: but they should be.

I agree wholeheartedly! (of course)

The response to Susan Boyle is quite alarming...it shows how widespread this idea that beauty=quality is. She's a woman who can sing, the way she looks shouldn't be a factor...and yet, everyone has gone bananas! I love all these people saying "Well done her for having the guts to go out there...I really admire people like that!"...the people saying this are the people who would have ridiculed her if she hadn't been any good. I hope they all feel sick inside...

I'm amused that you refer to the Daily Mail as a 'journal'...I think the proper term is 'decorated toilet paper'...

I don't get the Jessica Simpson thing - I heard Eminem had criticised her for getting fat and when I went and googled her I was expecting her to be seriously obese! But she looks really healthy! That's what people are supposed to look like! You're not supposed to be able to see every bone in someone's body!

In conclusion...people are stupid.

I never heard of Simon Corwell before this show because I'm french. I think he plays a role, that he may not be as harsh as he appears inside of him.

Apart from that, you have written a great article as usual :)
