Of course, it's hardly necessary for Brits to look all the way across the Atlantic for an example of an empire in decline. Yet Britain did not have to surrender its ideals; in fact, its democracy has only grown more vibrant and its position in the world has stayed important. To ease the pressure of its huge debt, the United States only has to inflate its currency -- something that is probably inevitable anyway, considering all of the overspending. The point is that it's way too early to predict the end of Pax Americana; and that's a good thing for you guys, considering that your other next best hope is the force du frappe. I have a blog, too, on world affairs -- it's called Views from the Left Coast and it's at http://viewsfromtheleftcoast.blogspot.com. Want to link?

This was another excellent read--good stuff--of course, starting the post off with a Monty Python sketch perked my ears up immediately! :)

Colin Powell was absolutely right about Iraq--but the great tragedy was that his words fell on deaf ears. He was far outnumbered and Bush was never much of one for listening to opposition (unlike the current U.S. president who welcomes it).

As someone who believes in fate, I actually think that this is a good thing for America--although it is a real shame that so many undeserving coutnries are in the fallout of our economic meltdown. For too long, Americans have been way too greedy and this is a wake up call. Hopefully, this economic downturn will cause people to not only be more moderate in their own lavish spending--but to also think more about how many resources we collectively waste. I really believe that more people need to concentrate on 'wanting what they have' rather than 'having what they want.' I try to live by that philosophy myself.
