A very deeply thought out examination on torture and how it undermines the credibility of modern nations. As an American, it baffles me how the administration that left office with a 20% approval rating and led to the complete turnover of Congress to the opposing party still believes that they have any say in the policies of the current administration. Dick Cheney is quite possibly one of the most REVILED men in the US currently. His own party convinced him years ago that running for president would be disastrous.

I agree that torture undermines the credibility of the US in reestablishing it's international diplomatic credibility. Obama is working very hard to reshape American relationships that were damaged during the past 8 years. Most Americans have no idea just how much the US has fallen in international regard because of Guantanamo and the illegal imprisonment of foreign nationals. I think that with the passage of years, most will realize that the Bush era of torture was an equally dark chapter to the detainment of Japanese Americans during WWII in California concentration camps.

As it is, there is still far too many people in the US who have been brainwashed by the propaganda of fear and the use of religious manipulation by the past administration. In a recent poll, it was found that the Americans who identified themselves with religion and attended services regularly were more likely to support torture on prisoners by almost 40%. That attests to the conservative political alignment of the American Evangelical churches and the manipulation of fear by the previous administration. This is a corruption of the ideals of Christianity. The Vatican opposes the use of torture, but American evangelicals support it? It makes no sense.

As usual, you have done an excellent job of providing relevant history and insight reflective of your capacity for deep thought as well. It's astonishing that many Americans do not perceive how their addictions to war mongering, torture techniques and their cover-ups, as well as, their attempts to justify and rationalize these acts have lowered the esteem of their nation to a rock bottom level, in the eyes of citizens and governments in other democratic nations in the world. More recently what happened at Abu Ghraib, and Guantánamo Bay are absolutely despicable examples of perversion of law, abuse and torture - in the name of democracy and while claiming God is on their side!

As a Canadian, I no longer consider America to be a "friendly" neighboring country. I consider it to be a terrifying vain glorious nation that can no longer be trusted, and most certainly I am not alone. Hopefully, the election of Obama and continued support by the electorate will bring about changes that are so badly needed south of the border.

I have come to the conclusion that anything labeled as "macho" or "manly" is never a good thing. I am against any form of torture (with the exception of mind games because they are so dang fun).
