<description>Brilliant analysis and comparison of the challenges that face American healthcare reform. May I add to this list that another reason the price of pharmaceuticals is so inflated in the United States, beyond research and development, is the fact that Big Pharma spends millions upon millions of dollars every year on lobbying the government, attorneys to pursue their interests, PR firms to market directly to the American public. Doctors are highly opposed to pharmaceuticals marketing directly to the public as it creates uneducated drug trends and fads as well as raising drug prices across the board. The marketing of drugs also creates untold diagnostic headaches for health care practitioners who must deal with patients who demand brand specific medications. Drug marketing benefits not the public, but insurance companies and Big Pharma.
