"The best hope is perhaps that the individual citizen has learned something; maybe the pain of the present period will increase wariness."

Indeed, this is the best hope. Society in general buffers the individual from direct and immediate consequence and, as a result, we fail to respond as quickly as we should. As an example, people run up credit cards with debts they can't pay because they experience no crashing fall and no pain at the cashier. It is later, when they can't pay what they owe and bankrupcy looms, that the wound is noticed. We are disconnected from the source of so many things. Perhaps reconnecting will be what ultimately returns power to the individual. Great article. I enjoyed reading this very much. cgn

Well written!
"Return to normalcy" seems to be the only advice the leaders can give, even thought he normal state of affairs led to this mess, like you said. But it seems the leaders are unable to advise people on what *not* to do, perhaps because they don't really understand what went wrong in the first place, and you can't avoid what you can't identify.

That sounds like a painful and incredibly apt metaphor for what we are going through with the international credit crises. Here in the states, there was some minor crowing about the rate of unemployment dropping for the first time in a year. It's not actually dropping. The truth is, people are just falling off the unemployment logs as their benefit year runs out. So many have just given up searching for work or have accepted under-employment as part time menial labor or unskilled retail workers.

Well, I guess I am just part of the bloody scab that is this recession.

Such a well written, and beautifully thought out post. Thank you.
